Spain will win the FIFA World Cup 2018! That’s the word from the artificial intelligence that guesses the results of football matches!
Not Paul the octopus, Achilles the cat or goats to “guess” which team will win the final of the FIFA World Cup 2018 to be played on July 15th. Artificial intelligence has guessed which team will win the cup, this AI is controlled by a group of researchers from the Technische Universitat in Dortmund, the Technical University of Munich and the University of Ghent in Belgium. The researchers used machine learning, considering numerous variables: the population of each country, its gross domestic product (GDP), the FIFA ranking, the number of players of the various nations already playing together in a club, the average age of players, how many Champions Leagues they have won and bookmakers’ odds ratio.
Considering all these factors, this AI simulated the entire football tournament, “playing” all the matches and reaching the final. The matches of the FIFA World Cup 2018 were simulated 100,000 times.
According to this artificial intelligence, Spain will win the FIFA World Cup 2018. However, the IA has also hypothesized other scenarios where the winners could be Germany, Brazil, France, Belgium or Argentina (in this order, according to the IA).
Of course, these results are not 100% reliable, as the researchers said, and do not consider many variables. So, we will have to wait for 15 July to find out if Artificial Intelligence was right or not! It is not the first time, however, that technology has tried to guess the winners of an event, in fact in February, thanks to Big Data, it was possible to guess the winners of Sanremo 2018, Italian Song Festival.
