2019 is coming and Gartner has already drafted the top 10 strategic technology trends for 2019, we have already seen some of these trends in 2018. Let’s find out them immediately!
- Autonomous Things;
- Augmented Analytics;
- AI-Driven Development;
- Digital Twins;
- Empowered Edge;
- Immersive Experience;
- Smart Spaces;
- Digital Ethics and Privacy;
- Quantum Computing.
The 10 strategic technology trends are part of 3 main areas: intelligent, digital and mesh.
Among Gartner top 10 strategic technology trends for 2019 we can see how artificial intelligence is the king. In fact, presenting the top 10 strategic technology trends for 2019, Gartner head of research, Brian Burke, said that artificial intelligence is everywhere and it is the basis of almost everything we do today in technology.
Driverless cars, robots, drones, artificial intelligence allows all these autonomous things to perform functions which previously were performed by humans. In addition, autonomous things interact with the surrounding environment and with people. According to Gartner, in 2021, 10% of cars will be driverless.
With augmented analytics Garner refers to an approach to automate data comprehension through machine learning and natural language processing technologies (NLP).
If until now, data scientists have dealt with data analysis, Gartner believes that in 2019 there will be a set of tools to analyze data. More and more users could access to these tools and data and these users will be citizen data scientists. A citizen data scientist is an intermediate figure between technicians (data scientists) and the average user who analyzes data thanks to analytics systems with prescriptive and predictive functions. Data, but especially information obtained by it, will be more and more integrated into business applications, for example in the departments of human resources, marketing, sales, customer care and finance.
Artificial intelligence can be used in applications development to automate the process of data analysis or testing. According to Gartner, by 2022, there will be artificial intelligence co-developers as a part of the teams of at least 40% of new applications development projects.
Digital twins are a digital representation of a physical object. These copies have their own lives and interact between themselves only in the digital world.
By 2021, the half of large companies will use digital twins with the advantage of a 10% improvement and effectiveness. This is the estimate made by Gartner for the top 10 strategic technology trends for 2019.
Edges are endpoint devices used by people or incorporated into the surrounding world. The term edge computing indicates: “the processing of information at the edge of the network, where data is produced”. According to Gartner, edge computing and cloud computing will soon be complementary models, this means that cloud services could be distributed as centralized services on distributed servers. Furthermore, storage, computing and advanced AI and analysis capabilities will give edge devices greater capacity.
Companies, in both B2C and B2B, are experimenting with more immersive technologies. In 2020, according to Gartner, these will be tested by 70% of companies, but only 25% of these applications will be released in production.
Blockchain could change the industrial reality making it more transparent, lowering costs, reducing transaction times and eliminating central authorities that underpin the current model. Gartner’s list of 10 strategic technology trends illustrates how Blockchain technologies will dominate in 2019 too, even if the impact of this technology will not be noticed for another ten years: by 2030 Blockchain will have created 3.1 billion dollars in business value.
Smart spaces are physical or digital environments populated by human beings and enabled by technology. They are characterized by more and more autonomy, intelligence and connection. They take a cue from smart cities and according to Gartner they are gaining importance becoming an integral part of our daily life. Smart spaces could help in issues such as the reduction of global warming, for this reason the European Union has created a program that involves several cities, including Milan.
Digital Ethics and Privacy
Issues of digital ethics and privacy are very current topics: individuals, governments, organizations are increasingly concerned about the use of their data. For this reason, both governments and companies are increasingly facing this issue – as we are seeing with GDPR. This topic of privacy is linked to that of ethics and to that of the trust of clients or electors. As a result, all the positions that an organization will take about privacy should be coherent with its ethical conduct. Gartner expects that by 2021, organizations that have underestimated privacy issues, will pay 100% more than competitors who have not underestimated these issues.
The latest trend of 2019 concerns quantum computing. If today only 1% of the world organizations allocates budget to quantum computing, by 2023 the trend will change: 20% of organizations will have invested in quantum computing.
Quantum computers allow the resolution of problems that are difficult to solve through a traditional approach or with long resolution times for a traditional algorithm. Quantum computers find a perfect environment in military, automotive, insurance, financial and pharmaceutical industries, and in all companies where quality control is essential.
