Consulthink wins a funding “POR CALABRIA FESR-FSE 2014-2020” with Spidasec

New achievements for Consulthink! Consulthink wins the funding “POR CALABRIA FESR-FSE 2014-2020”, for the Asse I – Promozione della ricerca e dell’innovazione” whose goal is the “rafforzamento del sistema innovativo regionale e nazionale” with the objective being: “Supporto alla realizzazione di progetti complessi di attività di ricerca e sviluppo su poche aree tematiche di rilievo e all’applicazione di soluzioni tecnologiche funzionali alla realizzazione delle strategie di S3”.

The idea proposed by Consulthink is a system called “Spidasec – Spid Advanced Security” whose goal is to improve the general security of Spid as well as the trust between the parties involved.

Spid – “sistema pubblico dell’identità digitale” (in English “public system of digital identity”) – is a system which allows users to say goodbye to the tens of passwords, keywords and pins needed to identify themselves in Company and in Public Administration systems. Thanks to Spid, in fact, users and companies can use different devices with various online services of the Public Administration and of the member companies by way of a unique digital identity. To obtain a Spid identity, the user has to request one from one of the 5 currently existing companies. These companies will verify the user’s information and will then provide a digital identity.

This system has several advantages: the most intuitive is that the user will need to remember only one password and one username to use many services. Another advantage is strong protection of personal data because the service provider will obtain only the user’s data which are strictly necessary to complete the transaction. For service providers there are several advantages too:  surveys among the users will not be necessary and there will be no need to worry about hacking attacks to steal credentials, or about fake or double profiles.

The Spid system is one year old and counts more than 1,100,000 digital identities released, more than 3,720 active Public Administrations and more than 4,273 available services.

However, Spid has some limits: there are few companies and few Public Administration authorities that use it, this means that Spid needs more promotion and a system which is more useable. One of the most important things to be done is to improve the security level of the system, it must be impossible to use a fake document to enter the system to obtain another user’s information and services. With Spidasec, Consulthink will take on the challenge of improving the level of security of the current method of identification and authentication, thereby defending the end users’ identity from violations and thefts. In addition, Consulthink aims to actively promote Spid and to improve the interaction between the user and the system. This is all possible thanks to the internal structure of Research and Development, managed by Marco Pirrone and with the help of the Security Unit managed by Alberto Caporro with Roberto Piccirillo’s support.

Consulthink is not alone in this project. The University of Calabria will support Consulthink in this endeavor. The University will test Spid to dispense university services to students and professors. Poste Italiane will support Consulthink as well: it will be an identity provider as well as a subject of experiment of security solutions and will monitor and verify system compliances of the distribution services using Spid. Consulthink’s third partner will be ICAR-CNR, which will guarantee users’ security, locating and preventing privacy and digital identity threats.

This is an ambitious and innovative project for Consulthink, one in which Consulthink will, without doubt, excel.
